5th October, Stage 1 Princes Risborough Pheonix Trail

General Info

The Pheonix Trail is traffic free and situated from Thame to Princess Risborough (or the other way). It is a 5 mile route that is part tarmac, part limestone dust and great for the pram. The map is from the site http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/phoenix-trail-princes-risborough-to-thame, which is full of useful information.

In regards to parking, we started our run from just outside Princess Risborough, parking along the ramp marked as a 1:15. The ramp only has room for about 5 cars but we were early on a Sunday morning so had no trouble. If that is full, there is lay by parking just up the road.

Run Stats

We were joined on the 10k there and back run by Dan and it was a fun pace, lots of talking, singing and pointing out trees, statues and cows.  As well as dodging horse manure, or not  :)

Overall Experience

Weather was sunny and cool, which sets the whole thing up for being a positive experience!  We set out around 10am and so whilst there were a few others using the trail we did not hit any congestion and where did come across other runners, cyclists and walkers it was wide enough to pass without having to stop. It is a very tranquil peaceful path, with mainly fields and trees lining it and plenty of wildlife to point out. In places were picnic tables and at one point up on tall posts a few animal carvings.

Pros:-
  • Its tranquillity makes it an ideal trail to use when timing the pram run to coincide with nap time.
  • It is a great path for a quick pace if looking to do a tempo run or a fast 5k
  • Great if being accompanied by an older child on a bike
Things to consider: - :-
  • Early or end of day runs mean you will pass few other trail users. So if you are not used to or comfortable with running solo either take a running partner or go between mid morning and mid afternoon. I would be happy to this on my own but I do run a lot on my own and sometimes along quiet country/river path routes.
  • Facilities - where we parked there are no facilities so bring water, snacks and a travel potty! Alternatively if trying this trail,  park in the centre of Thame or  Princess Risborough as there will be more available there.
Would I do it again? Yes if looking for a steady tempo run or a peaceful run to allow Scarlett to nap or just relax. Next time I would park in one of the towns so the run could be finished with a nice coffee and slice of cake :)
